The research
Summary This study describes use of tikanga, in particular, whakatauaki in the future planning of a Kaupapa Maori team, He Kakano in South Auckland.
Objectives The aim of the study was to identify and operationalise aspects of a future planning process for sustainable delivery of Kaupapa Maori (Specialist Maori) mental health from a team called He Kakano, within Child and Adolescent Mental health services in South Auckland
Study design A 2 day hui was held with members of the team and a facilitator, Whaea Moe Milne.
Methods Qualitative
Results The impact of tikanga Maori practices on strategic future planning was significant.
Conclusions Use of tikanga in future service planning for this Kaupapa Maori team was useful. The thought processes, values, beliefs and behaviours that stemmed from the use of whakatauaki enabled rich discussion and seemed to open up possibilities of planning ahead. This approach is likely to enhance the sustainable delivery of Maori responsive services in mental health and other sectors. Thereby improving outcomes for Maori.
