Our projects

Our projects have been chosen in response to two Ministry of Health documents that chart the way forward for mental health and addiction services in New Zealand:

  • Tauawhitia te Wero - Embracing the Challenge: National Mental Health and Addiction Workforce Development Plan 2006-2009
  • Te Tahuhu - Improving Mental Health 2005-2015: The Second New Zealand Mental Health and Addiction Plan 2005.

Our work

Asian, migrant and refugee mental health and addiction workforce development
Cultural capability of the workforce is essential to ensure Asian, migrants and refugees have equity in access to appropriate and high quality services. We work with the sector to ensure the work we do meets the needs of the workforce and ultimately those of people who use services.

Careers in mental health and addiction
A career in mental health and addiction is one that makes a difference. Te Pou is involved in promoting careers in the sector and building a quality workforce.

CLIMATE MH e-learning
CLIMATE MH is an interactive e-learning professional development programme which has been developed for clinicians working in DHBs and NGOs. The Ministry of Health leads this project with Te Pou's support.

Dialectical behaviour therapy training
This project aims to give training in dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) to people who work in mental health and addictions, so they can include effective behavioural treatments in their tool kit to support recovery in people with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder and other complex, difficult to treat problems.

International Initiative for Mental Health Leadership (IIMHL)
IIMHL is a leadership programme involving learning exchanges between mental health leaders in seven participating countries. A two-day network meeting follows each exchange. Te Pou supports this initiative through the provision of planning, liaison and evaluation.

Leadership and management
Te Pou provides emerging and current leaders with the opportunity to access national mental health leadership and management development programmes, through sponsoring programmes delivered by Blueprint for Learning.

Let's get real
Let's get real is a framework that describes the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes required to deliver effective mental health and addiction treatment services.

NGO workforce development
NGO workforce relationships with service users are focused on supporting and assisting the integration of service users with their community life. Te Pou supports capability and capacity buliding in the clinical NGO sector.

Nursing
All mental health and addiction nurses have a key role in leading the changes required to improve the health outcomes of service users. Te Pou is undertaking a number of nursing projects to address this challenge.

Planners and funders
This project supports mental health and addiction planners and funders to be competent, confident, innovative and future-focused in their roles, enabling them to meet the requirements of their DHBs and lead transformation in the mental health and addiction sector through their planning and purchasing arrangements.

Primary mental health
The primary mental health workforce is continuing to grow and diversify, creating workforce development opportunities and challenges. Te Pou is delivering a number of activities that support the development of this workforce.

Service user workforce development
Te Pou has a mandate to develop the entire workforce, including service users. We aim to provide opportunities to grow and develop the service user workforce nationally and are carrying out a number of activities to achieve this.

Talking therapies
The aim of this work is to explore talking therapies which are currently used, and what might enhance their basic quality, sustainability and spread across New Zealand.

Workforce data
High quality and up-to-date information about the capacity and capability of the mental health and addiction workforce is necessary to inform workforce planning across the sector. Te Pou is currently undertaking surveys on the older persons, and service user/consumer/peer support mental health and addiction workforces.
