o Te Whakaara Nui

Origins of our name

A pillar for both people and practices in mental health

The name Te Pou sprang from the earliest conversations held between the Wise Trust Board and the Ministry of Health, when the establishment of a national centre were being discussed.

During the Trust's presentation to the Ministry, Wise trustee Brian Rankin stood, holding a copy of Te Tahuhu, and said: "if you are Te Tahuhu, then we are your Pou".

The Trust went on to win the contract and began to discuss the type of brand that was needed. The Board felt the brand should reflect the uniqueness of New Zealand when standing alongside similar international centres; it should also be easy to say and its concept easy to grasp.

Paul Meredith, a Maori researcher from Ngati Kaputuhi, Ngati Maniapoto, was engaged to look at a name that would reflect the activities and aspirations of the centre. After an initial briefing he said: "you are Te Pou". It was at this point that those present remembered Brian Rankin's earlier comment to the Ministry.

Paul Meredith went on to develop the description and strap line: o Te Whakaaro Nui, or wise thinking. The primary artists who developed the brand were Hone Tutua (Ngati Awa), Rebecca de Haas and Angela Alonso.

The name Te Pou has met with wide approval for its meaning and simplicity. It is distinctive and uniquely New Zealand, credible and strong, embracing and enduring.

Te Pou's dream is for its name to be representative of an inspirational organisation working to make mental health about wellness and hope.
