Tools and training

Te Pou delivers training to upskill the mental health workforce in information collection, and increase sector knowledge and understanding of how outcomes measurement and information can be used to improve mental health services. We also build DHB and NGO capability to manage and maintain the ongoing workforce skill development that is required for mental health information to continue to be collected and used.

This section includes useful tools and information for clinicians, MH-SMART and information utility trainers and others.

  • Feedback scenarios - videos depicting clinicians providing feedback on HoNOS, HoNOSCA and HoNOS65+ scores to service users.
  • HoNOS assessment in practice - videos demonstrating one clinician's approach to incorporating HoNOS into routine clinical assessment.
  • HoNOS training online - practice completing HoNOS, HoNOSCA and HoNOS65+ ratings by viewing a short video clip and completing an online rating form. Compare your results against the consensus rating feedback, in real time!
  • Information guides - a number of information guides are being developed.
  • Multi-disciplinary teams - see how HoNOS(CA) can be used at the team level by watching a presentation or downloading the supporting documents.
  • Outcomes graph builder - download a simple tool to generate HoNOS, HoNOSCA, HoNOS65+, HoNOS-Secure and HoNOS-LD outcomes graphs for individual service users.
  • Training calendar - find out about upcoming training opportunities.
  • Trainers forum - use this discussion forum to stay in touch with other trainers and share information and resources. Access a copy of the clinicians toolkit for information utility trainers.

The background

The requirement that mental health services collect and use outcome measures information in turn requires ongoing skill development, growth and changes in the sector's workforce capacity and capability.

Te Pou will develop local and regional strategies to meet the ongoing training requirements of mental health services with respect to outcome measures. We will also develop and implement a national training plan to ensure consistency of training materials and messages across the country. The plan will need to be robust, with an ability to change focus as the sector's needs change. We will provide support to DHB trainers to deliver foundation MH-SMART training.

Train the trainer workshops are delivered to maintain a pool of MH-SMART trainers in DHBs. These trainers require ongoing development and support, which is managed nationally. In addition, an information utility training programme is delivered regionally, and information utility workshops are held for specific target groups in DHBs and NGOs.

Other key stakeholders in the wider mental health sector have also requested training to help them better understand the MH-SMART approach and use of outcomes information, and Te Pou will provide this as required.
