Let's get real - Home

Background

Work on the Let's get real project began in February 2006. It involved:

  • initial meetings with key sector stakeholders
  • an environmental scan of existing frameworks in the sector
  • a literature review of methodologies to develop capability and competency frameworks
  • establishment of an expert advisory group and a drafting group.

Let’s get real brings together work undertaken by people in the sector over the past decade on competency and capability frameworks specific to mental health and addiction services.

Development of the Let’s get real framework included regional workshops in November and December 2006. These were attended by people working in mental health and addiction services, people who use services and their families. Workshop attendees worked as groups on scenarios that reflected the journeys or pathways of service users with mental health and addiction services. Using these scenarios, groups identified the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to support tangata whaiora in their journeys of recovery.

The final draft copy for consultation was prepared by the drafting group with members from the Ministry of Health, and the four national workforce development centres Te Pou, The Werry Centre, Te Rau Matatini and Matua Raki. The draft consultation document was published in early September 2007 and four consultation hui were held that month. An additional teleconference was organised for a small group of Dunedin stakeholders. The submissions period was open until 12 October and feedback received during the consultation period was incorporated into the final version. All seven skill sets were refined as a result of feedback and peer review.

The Let's get real document was designed by Gibson Rusden Design Group and the photography is by John Daley.

Over the next two years, it is expected that mental health and addiction services, and education and training providers, will implement Let’s get real into their organisations, services, and education and training courses and programmes.

The Let’s get real advisory group was set up to guide and advise the creation of the Let’s get real framework, and the seven Real Skills.
