HoNOS and other recommended measures

On this page:

HoNOS family of measures

A key focus of the MH-SMART initiative is developing and training people to use a suite of outcome measures. These measures allow information about service users' changes in health, wellbeing and circumstances to be collected.

The HoNOS family of measures was the first standard measure of assessment and recovery mandated for collection in New Zealand. The HoNOS is used in a number of countries including UK, Norway and Australia; HoNOS measures are clinician-rated and completed only after a comprehensive assessment has been carried out.

The HoNOS family of measures consists of:

  • HoNOS - designed for adult service users between the age 18 and 65 years
  • HoNOSCA - designed for children and adolescent service users between the age of 4 and 17 years
  • HoNOS65+ - amended version of the HoNOS designed for adult service users over the age of 65
  • HoNOS-LD - designed for adult service users who have a dual diagnosis i.e., mental illness and an intellectual disability (may be in use but is not currently mandated)
  • HoNOS Secure - designed for adult service users who are being supported by forensic services (may be in use, but is not mandated).

All DHBs will be able to provide a range of reports for use by service users, tangata whaiora, clinicians, funders and planners and managers etc.

Who is using HoNOS?

All DHBs are required by the Ministry of Health to collect HoNOS, HoNOS65+ and HoNOSCA., and all clinical staff will be trained in its use.

Other recommended measures

A suite of outcome measures is currently under development in New Zealand. These include measures that will be used in the mental health sector in a range of ways.

The information programme is supporting the development of a number of other measures. It is expected that increasing the number of standard measures available will add to the quality of mental health information and will support the recovery focus of mental health services.

Measures highlighted for ongoing development

  • Taku Reo, Taku Mauri Ora - My Voice, My Life a service user self-assessment measure.
  • Hua oranga measure for Maori.
  • A functioning measure (PSP and CGAS)
  • ADOM, an alcohol and other drug measure.

Taku Reo, Taku Mauri Ora - My voice, My life - Service User Self-Assessed Standard Measure of Outcome

Tāku Reo, Tāku Mauri Ora - My Voice, My Life is a tangata whaiora/service user self-assessed outcomes measure developed for tāngata whaiora/service users by tāngata whaiora/service users.

The findings of this research led by Case Consulting are now available for download.

ADOM, an alcohol and other drug measure

The Alcohol and Drug Outcome Measure (ADOM) is a brief outcome measure. It consists of 28 questions relevant to New Zealand alcohol and other drug (AOD) services. Service users and providers were involved in its development. This group included Maori and Pacific service users. The tool can be used in a range of AOD treatment services. It focuses on a range of substances. The questionnaire is designed for service users and clinicians to complete together.
