Success stories

Knowing the People Planning (KPP) has been successfully used by health services in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In 2008 Te Pou carried out a survey of the use of KPP in New Zealand DHBs (PDF,144KB). The benefits identified included:

  • rapid feedback of results to both individuals and teams
  • access to real time data to inform team and service planning
  • service planning could be based on identified service user needs
  • the KPP survey spreadsheet is flexible and can be adapted to local needs and issues
  • leadership for KPP can come from various levels of mental health organisations
  • KPP has a local focus.

By 2009 10 New Zealand district health boards (DHBs) were using KPP across their mental health services and two DHBs had introduced similar systems. In 2010, three additional DHBs are being assisted to use KPP. KPP pilot projects are being run in two NGOs including a kaupapa Maori service.

The stories of change below highlight the success of KPP in two New Zealand DHBs.
