Knowing the people planning - Home

Acknowledgements

David King and Barry Welsh created Knowing the People Planning (KPP) and managed the project since its inception in 1999. At the outset, stakeholders, service users, family and whanau members, clinicians and managers agreed on the 10 key features they believed would make mental health services work well for them.

KPP was then piloted in Westport, Blenheim and Christchurch. The pilot led to a field trial of KPP by five district health boards (DHBs) during 2002-2003. The KPP toolkit was then developed. These DHBs continue to use KPP and the idea has spread. Today 10 DHBs are using KPP and it has also been trialled in both Bristol and Plymouth in the United Kingdom.

Following an extensive career in health service management in England and New Zealand, David is now an independent researcher.

Barry is a principal technical specialist with the Ministry of Health. He has a psychology degree, a Masters in Health Services Management, and is currently undertaking research to evaluate the implementation and outcome of KPP for a management thesis.

Te Pou manages the KPP project and acknowledges David and Barry's continuing contribution to the use and development of KPP.
