Regional workforce coordinators
The role of regional workforce coordinator was established in May 2004 by the Mental Health Directorate of the Ministry of Health to provide a continuous and systemic response to mental health workforce development. The four coordinators are charged with ensuring better alignment of regional projects, national policy and broader DHB health workforce networks and initiatives. They do this by:
- building strong relationships within and across the mental health sector
- facilitating the uptake of national mental health workforce development opportunities
- increasing regional feedback on, and participation in, national, regional and district mental health workforce development planning
- ensuring national centres and programmes are responsive to the needs of the mental health sector
- supporting DHB and NGO mental health and addiction workforce development.
Workforce development imperatives
- Infrastructure development.
- Training and development.
- Recruitment and retention.
- Research and evaluation.
- Organisational development.
All four regions - northern, midland, central and southern - have been working very differently. As of 1 July 2007, funding for the regional workforce development coordinators transfered to Te Pou. Now, although all the coordinators provide the same service throughout the country, the financial mechanisms of funding them are different.
Two coordinators, Janet Edmond and Stuart Gray, are Te Pou employees, while the other two coordinator positions are sub-contracted, through the NDSA and Lakes DHB, to Te Pou.
Despite the different funding mechanisms, all four coordinators are committed to building a cohesive and consistent team approach to national and regional workforce development initiatives.
