DBT training

Imagine a day when borderline personality disorder is no longer considered difficult to treat; where mental health professionals know their interventions will help.

This is the future we envisage at Te Pou. Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT) is one of the most evidence based treatment for people with borderline personality disorder. Research shows DBT can effectively reduce suicidal behaviour, withdrawal from treatment, psychiatric hospitalisation, anger and interpersonal difficulties.

It is a comprehensive cognitive behaviour treatment for people with borderline personality disorder, especially those who are so distressed they are forced into repeated patterns of contemplating suicide or self-harm.

Te Pou has worked closely with the sector to ensure the best approach to extending and improving the use of this treatment. First, we commissioned a report to identify the future direction of DBT training in New Zealand. John Gawith and Michael Batcheler from DBT-NZ led this work, and gathered feedback from DHBs on DBT training requirements.

Following this report, Te Pou worked with DBT-NZ to develop high quality DBT training capacity in New Zealand. This included work with Behavioural Tech in the USA, to gain affiliate status for the delivery of training in New Zealand.

DBT-NZ now leads, coordinates and delivers DBT training in New Zealand. Contact DBT-NZ for information about current DBT training opportunities.
