The research websites provided on this page aim to support information use and the translation of research into practice. You can access and search for relevant mental health and addiction research and evaluation projects, including published journal articles, reports, theses and unpublished grey literature.

  • Research Review New Zealand - The Research Review is a free service that highlights the latest important studies on various topics and provides you with commentary from New Zealand specialists.

International

  • Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health - The Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health is a research and knowledge exchange network with searchable abstracts relating to the mental wellbeing of senior people.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals - The Directory provides links to a variety of free-access full text, quality controlled research journals, including 83 psychology journals and 103 public health journals.
  • Health Information Resources - This website features details and abstracts of evidence based reviews, UK guidelines and protocols, topic specialist libraries, books, journals and healthcare databases, images and web resources.
  • Involve Database - The database includes details of published and unpublished health and social care research projects that actively involve members of the public as partners in the research process.
  • Mental Health Care - Information on the latest research conducted in the mental health sector posted by The Institute of Psychiatry, King's College (updated weekly).
  • SAMHSAs National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices (NREPP) - This is a searchable database of mental health and substance abuse interventions that have been reviewed and rated by independent reviewers.
  • Social Care Online - Social Care Online provides summary information and research on all aspects of social care including mental health. Some links provide access to full-text reports.
  • The Cochrane Library - Includes details of evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more; these cover all aspects of health, including mental health.
  • The Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Co-ordinating Centre - This website offers a number of databases which include bibliographies of research relating to health promotion.
  • Turning research into practice - This search engine offers free access to a number of research databases that provide information allowing users to rapidly identify the highest quality clinical evidence for clinical practice. Visitors must register to access databases.

National

  • Balance NZ Bipolar and Depression Network - A useful database of bibliographies of mood disorder research. Visitors must register to access the database.
  • Kiwi Research Information Service - This website links users to open-access research documents produced at universities, polytechnics, and other research institutions throughout New Zealand.
  • Resources for researchers - This is a useful webpage for researchers as it provides links to datasets, presentations, publications and websites. It seeks to help inform choices and responses to the demographic, social and economic interactions that are shaping New Zealand’s future
  • Te Rau Matatini - This website has a searchable database including abstracts for articles relating to Maori mental health. Many also relate to the wider New Zealand community.
  • The Mental Health Foundation - The Mental Health Foundation website features a searchable bibliographic database of New Zealand and international mental health promotion research.
  • The National Addiction Centre - The National Addiction Centre webpages lists a range of current research projects under the headings planned research; ongoing research; recently completed; publication and dissemination ongoing; and past research.
  • The Tangata Whenua, Community and Voluntary Research Centre - Downloadable research reports are available here on community and voluntary organisations including a number which relate to mental health services.

  • Centre for Applied Cross Cultural Research - The Centre for Applied Cross-cultural Research (CACR) is an inter-disciplinary, applied research centre within the School of Psychology, Victoria University of Wellington. Areas of research include cross-cultural comparison, acculturation and adaption, cultural diversity and ethno-psycologies.
  • Centre for Asian and Migrant Health Research - The Centre for Asian and Migrant Health Research brings together research that advances understanding of public health issues that can improve access to healthcare and promote good health among the Asian and migrant populations in New Zealand.
  • Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation (CAHRE) - The Centre for Asian Health Research and Evaluation (CAHRE), is a research unit at the University of Auckland. The centre has a strong focus on current Asian Health issues, and seeks to develop strategic ways to improve and visualise the health status of the Asian population.
  • Centre for Mental Health Research - The Centre for Mental Health Research (CMHR) is a research unit at the University of Auckland. It supports mental health research, policy and service development that will contribute to better outcomes for service users through the planning, monitoring and evaluation of mental health and addictions services.
  • Gambling and Addictions Research Centre - The Gambling and Addictions Research Centre at Auckland University of Technology brings together research that improves New Zealander's understanding of how gambling and addictions affect society, and enhances policy and professional practice. The Centre aims to: disseminate research-based information through publications, seminars and mass media; advocate evidence-based gambling and addictions policy and service provision; develop and provide education programmes in conjunction with problem gambling service providers and the gambling industry; and work collaboratively with other research organisations and stakeholders.
  • Health Services Research Centre - The Health Services Research Centre is part of Victoria University of Wellington. It focuses on research and evaluation related to Maori health, Pacific health, health systems, priority setting, access and disability issues.
  • Mental Health Clinical Research Unit - The Mental Health Clinical Research Unit (MHCRU) is a joint unit of the University Department and the Mental Health Division of the Canterbury District Health Board. Research areas include depression, bipolar affective disorder, bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, social anxiety disorder, psychotherapy and the genetics of depression and personality.
  • National Addiction Centre - A university-based National Centre dedicated to developing and promoting effective interventions for people with addiction and co-existing disorders related problems in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • National Institute for Public Health and Mental Health Research - The Mission of the National Institute for Public Health and Mental Health Research (NIPMHR) is to conduct high quality public and mental health research that contributes to the reduction of health disparities, improves the health of New Zealanders and generates and extends knowledge.The NIPHMHR is multidisciplinary, comprising five research centres and a number of research programmes.
  • Population Studies Centre - The centre generates and co-ordinates research in population studies and migration research . The research programmes address questions relating to demographic transitions, population distribution, migration, immigration and emigration and has linked these to economic, political and social transformations.
  • Social Science Research Centre - A multi-disciplinary centre set up to facilitate a more collaborative approach to social science research within the University of Canterbury and the broader Canterbury region. A key aim of the centre is to develop joint research programmes with private sector providers.
  • Taupua Waiora Centre For Maori Health Research - The Centre which is based at Auckland University of Technology carries out research in three main areas - Māori access to health services, Māori health promotion and Māori health workforce development. The Taupua Waiora Mission is 'To make a significant and distinctive contribution to reducing inequalities in health between Māori and non-Māori and improving Māori health outcomes'.
  • Te Pümanawa Hauora - Mäori Health Research Programme - Te Pümanawa Hauora (TPH) is the Mäori Health research programme within the Research Centre for Maori Health & Development, at Massey University. The programme focuses on research relating to Mäori research workforce development tobacco smoking, Mäori mental health and psychological wellbeing, diabetes, hepatitis B, child health & development, Mäori health policy, health services evaluation, housing & health, health sector governance & purchasing, and performance measurement.
  • Te Ropu Whariki Research Group - Te Ropu Whariki is a research group working in partnership with the SHORE Centre. The group aims to provide high quality research and to tautoko Maori communities, to contribute to uplifting the health of Maori and to work towards Maori development aspirations, to further the development of a Maori research workforce and to recognise multiple accountabilities, negotiated both within the Centre and with communities and other parties with whom we work.
  • The Centre for Gambling Studies - The Centre for Gambling Studies (CGS) at the University of Auckland provides independent research aiming to minimise harm from gambling and to promote gambling related wellbeing in communities.

It includes a number of documents and discussions about organisational learning, and research and evaluation tools and guidelines.
  • CommunityNet Aotearoa - This website provides guidelines and information about matters such as research, evaluation and funding for beginners to advanced knowledge levels. The links page includes many international websites with free evaluation resources.
  • Programme Development and Evaluation: University of Wisconsin - This website has easy-to-use, practical tools and suggestions for improving program development and evaluation practices.
