What is Kia Noho Rangatira Ai Tātou?
A unique education programme developed by Te Pou and the Disabled Persons Assembly that puts human rights for disabled people and the Disability Convention into a New Zealand cultural context.
The name Kia Noho Rangatira Ai Tātou expresses the right of all people to exercise self-determination to participate as full citizens in their whānau, community and world.

System transformation
As we work towards the transformation of the disability system, the concepts at the heart of this unique programme are fundamental and timely:
- disabled persons' human rights
- self-determination
- citizenship
- belonging.

Informed by human rights education best practice, the programme is developed and delivered by disabled people.

Format
This interactive education programme is delivered in four modules. It has three main learning objectives:

understand the meaning of human rights and the New Zealand human rights system

learn about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)

apply practical knowledge of the Disability Convention.
The programme includes a manual which provides a practical reference guide to applying the Disability Convention.

Te Pou aims to deliver the human rights education programme in a way that suits you or your organisation’s needs. We have a range of options to participate in the Kia Noho Rangatira Ai Tātou programme. Please contact us to discuss any access requirements.
- For larger organisations, we welcome enquiries from organisations that are interested in providing education to 20+ staff. We are currently offering the programme via a 10-hour webinar series, delivered in four 2.5 hour modules.
- For individuals and smaller organisations, we offer set dates for our 10-hour webinar series that you can register for and participate in the four 2.5 hour modules.
- Other options: we are keen to share our programme with you. Please contact us and we can discuss which other options work best for you.
The programme is funded by the Whaikaha. For those with a Disability Support Service (DSS) contract, it is free to attend an in-person or online workshop. For those who do not have a DSS contract, there is a charge per participant. Please contact our team for further information on costs.
