NGO workforce development

A road map for non-government mental health and addiction organisations.

Te Pou o te Whakaaro Nui (Te Pou) and Platform Trust have been working together to promote and support changes in the mental health and addiction sector - as outlined in Rising to the Challenge (Ministry of Health, 2012) and Blueprint II (Mental Health Commission, 2012).  The Ministry of Health’s New Zealand Health Strategy (2016) also signals a continued shift for the health system towards more person-centred, community-orientated services that are delivered closer to home.  In order to achieve this shift in service provision, it is critical that we focus on what is required to better understand, grow and develop the current, as well as the future, mental health and addiction workforce.

In 2015, Te Pou and Platform Trust published On Track: Knowing where we are going - a document which described some of the different ways that mental health and addiction service providers could accelerate system reform in order to help create the kind of system that New Zealanders want and need.

Two years on, Platform Trust and Te Pou are pleased to announce the publication of a companion document to ‘On Track’ called Fast Track: Challenges and opportunities for the mental health and addiction community support workforce (2017)is a discussion paper that has evolved as a result of the discussion points raised by the sector in response to ‘On Track’.
