Postgraduate Certificate & Diploma courses in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

This programme is aimed at registered mental health and addiction professionals wishing to extend their skills and qualifications in the field of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT).

Participants gain knowledge in how CBT applies to common mental health issues: anxiety, depression, substance use issues and psychotic issues. The programme also covers the bicultural application of CBT.

The programme offers both a certificate and diploma level course.

The certificate course is a pre-requisite paper for the diploma level course (unless you are a Clin Psych with CBT training as part of Dip in Clin Psych qualification).

The programme is run by the University of Otago, Wellington, Department of Psychological Medicine.

Registered mental health and addiction professionals, with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience employed by a DHB, Ministry of Health funded NGO or PHO can apply for these programmes.

Both papers are run over the full academic year (March to October). Participants are required to attend three week-long blocks and final oral exam at the Wellington campus.

Additional theory and assignments are based around the implementation of CBT within participants usual clinical casework. Individual supervision by a clinical psychologist with expertise in CBT is an integral part of the course.

Participants develop skills which enable them to use CBT in their workplace.

Skills Matter funding covers all course fees. Participants apply their learning and receive individual face to face clinical supervision in their usual workplace, from an experienced clinical psychologist with substantial CBT experience.

During the programme, participants have access to:

• library resources
• online course resources via Moodle web-based system.

A travel and accommodation assistance grant is available for nurses who work 100km or more away from the nearest Skills Matter funded provider. However, this might not meet all of the nurse’s travel and accommodation costs and this should be considered before applying.

All applicants must enrol with the University online to be considered for this course.

Registration is in two stages:

1. Commence phase one of enrolment at Otago.ac.nz and click Apply online
2. As there is a clinical component to the courses, all enrolled applicants will be sent an Application for Acceptance (AfA) form. Successful applicants will be invited to continue with phase two of formal enrolment.
