The Team: What we do

Our Specialist Mental Health Services are provided by a range of outpatient, inpatient, community-based and mobile services throughout Canterbury. Specialist services include adult community, adult acute, rehabilitation, child, adolescent and family (CAF), forensic, alcohol and drug, intellectually disabled persons' health; and others.

We're looking for a Co-ordinating Consumer Advisor to join our Specialist Mental Health Services team on a full-time (1.0FTE, 40hr per week), fixed-term basis from approximately June 2019 - March 2020. This position will see you co-ordinating the work of the consumer advisory team (0.8 FTE) with a focus on effectively representing the interests and perspectives of consumers. The role also includes responsibilities as a Consumer Advisor (0.2 FTE) within SMHS.

The Role: Where you fit in

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Coordinating the Consumer Advisory team and chairing regular meetings
  • Effectively facilitating, supporting and co-ordinating consumer input and perspective into SMHS
  • Working in partnership with SMHS Family/Whanau Advisors and Consumer Advisors, clinical leaders, health professionals and management to influence a recovery approach in assessment, treatment and care
  • Promoting a mental health service free of discrimination and stigma towards consumers
  • Participating in the development and review of relevant policies and procedures, as well as service development, staff training and recruitment

Your skills will include the following:

  • Personal experience as a consumer of mental health services
  • A clear understanding and commitment to mental health and to the work of the SMHS, along with an understanding of relevant mental health structures and issues, the range of consumer opinion and the consumer movement
  • A working understanding of cultural issues relating to mental health and a commitment to bicultural service development
  • Effective team leadership and time management skills (proven management/supervisory experience is advantageous)
