About the team
The Intellectual Disability Service (IDS) is part of the Specialist Mental Health Services based at Wakari Hospital, high above Dunedin with stunning views of the city and ocean. The IDS comprises of three parts, Ward 10a - a 12 bed inpatient service, Helensburgh Cottage - a 4 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit and the Community Liaison Team.
Ward 10a is a medium secure 12 bed inpatient service for Intellectually Disabled clients, aged 17 to 65 years, whom require assessment and treatment under the Mental Health Act or are subject to the criminal justice system via the Intellectual Disability Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation Act 2003.

Our Mental Health Assistants are key team members who assist our nursing and allied health staff to ensure an effective and efficient service. As an Assistant working in Mental Health you'll need to have a positive attitude and good communication skills, be able to take direction and work well as part of the team. Computer literacy is essential and experience working with people in the health sector is an advantage.
Our ideal applicant will be confident in providing support and assisting patients; display initiative; be patient focussed at all times, and be able to adapt to a changing environment.
