About the service
Te Korowai-Whāriki is a regional and national service provider with its own unique identity and stakeholders. Te Korowai Whariki services are both inpatient and community based. Community forensic teams are based near the Courts and Prison in the Central Region, from Gisborne to Wanganui through to Wellington. Te Korowai Whariki Regional Forensic and Rehabilitation Inpatient Mental Health Services provide inpatient and outpatient care for both youth and adult clients. The service’s inpatient buildings are mainly located on the Rātonga-Rua-O-Porirua campus, 20 minutes from Wellington city. The site is unique in design and has purpose-built buildings. Based on the campus is also Tangaroa (Activity Centre), Ruaumoko(Maori cultural centre), Vaka O Le Pasifika (Pasifika cultural centre) and the Chapel which is also used as a drop-in centre for clients. The acute forensic inpatient services consists of Purehurehu (male only unit) and Rangipapa (mixed gender unit). Pukeko House is attached to Rangipapa unit. The regional forensic service also provides 17 step-down beds in the Inpatient Rehabilitation Service at Ratonga Rua-o-Porirua (Tawhirimatea and Tane Mahuta). The main function of Purehurehu and Rangipapa is to provide a safe and secure environment for people who have been admitted into hospital through the criminal justice system for assessment and/or treatment and rehabilitation/ recovery programmes.
About the role
We are seeking experienced registered nurses who have:
- Post registration education/learning and experience relevant to the specialty area of mental health
- Registration with New Zealand Nursing Council.
- Meet police vetting requirements
- A current practising certificate.
- A full NZ driving licence (not compulsory for all areas).
If you are an overseas nurse interested in moving to NZ, the process involves:
- Passing the IELTS (Academic)
- Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (if you have restrictions to scope you must have mental health)
Immigration: Applicants should FIRST establish their eligibility for registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand & Immigration New Zealand.

Mental Health, Addiction and Intellectual Disability Service MHAIDS spans three DHBs - Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital and Coast DHB’s and includes local, regional, and national services. The local MHAID services are provided from multiple sites within the 3DHB sub-region – greater Wellington, Hutt Valley and Wairarapa. Te Korowai Whariki services include regional forensic and rehabilitation services covering the Central region while the intellectual disability services extend the length and breadth of the country from six bases located in Whangarei, Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin.
