Peer Support Specialist

  • Part-time role available in Christchurch
  • 16 hrs per week, Friday and Saturday 11.00pm to 7.30am

We’re looking for someone with a good understanding and commitment to the principles of recovery. A real ‘people person’ who can engage with anyone!


Are you the Peer Support Specialist we are looking for? Someone who is passionate about helping people on their recovery journeys? Do you have your own experience of mental health and/or addictions? If so, then keep reading.

We have a part time opportunity available; you will be working in our Peer Acute Alternative service. This role is 16 hours per week working Friday and Saturday from 11.00pm to 7.30am

As a Peer Support Specialist, you might be kept busy supporting people with budgeting and independent daily living skills or attending appointments and advocating for people. You might be assisting people to connect with their communities. You’ll need to be prepared to do whatever it takes - cleaning, cooking, gardening, personal care or helping out with everyday household tasks.

The Team

You’ll be reporting to the Team Coach and joining our Peer Acute Alternative Service. This is a service delivery model that provides an alternative to a hospital admission, working in a team of 24 peer support specialists – all with a common purpose to support people experiencing mental illness.


We are interested to hear from people who have a caring nature and work in a recovery focused way. You will be able to provide medication support for our people and have impeccable attention to detail.

You’ll also have:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing Level 4 (NZCHW) or a recognised equivalent or be currently studying towards this qualification or a recognised equivalent.
  • You’ll have Intentional Peer Support training (IPS) or Peer Employment Training (PET) Certificate
  • You will have completed WRAP training
  • A full New Zealand drivers licence
  • You must hold a current first aid certificate or be willing to obtain one.
  • You’re a great listener the sort of person who will listen deeply to the people who use our services
  • You’re a fresh thinker, using curiosity and imagination to generate new ideas
  • You’re energising, inspiring others with enthusiasm and a take action approach
  • You’re a communicator - the sort of positive person who loves working with people
