Peer Support Worker

Based in Greymouth, West Coast

  • Share the hope of your own journey of addiction and recovery with tangata whaiora
  • Support others to maintain their recovery from problematic alcohol and/or drug use through facilitation of Peer Support Groups
  • Partner with those seeking to overcome problematic alcohol and/or drug use to find their own pathway to healing

About the role

The Peer Support Worker will draw on the hope of their own recovery journey to empower others to find appropriate support to live full and meaningful lives.

What will your responsibilities be:

  • Offer support by text, phone or in person to individuals seeking recovery from alcohol and/or drug misuse
  • Co-facilitation of peer support groups and educational groups
  • Appropriate, empathic, supportive relationships are developed with service users based on a shared experience of problematic alcohol and/or drug use

Our ideal candidate will have/be the following:

  • Is able to relate to people with sensitivity, compassion and patience
  • Is tactful, discrete and understands the importance of boundaries and confidentiality
  • Has experience supporting those recovering from problematic alcohol and/or drug use
  • Embodies the values and attitudes of The Salvation ArmyHas a willingness to work from a bicultural perspective
  • Understands how the Treaty of Waitangi applies in a health setting
  • Ability to work alone whilst also being part of a team
  • Is computer literate
  • Has a proven ability to be self-organised
  • Good written and oral communication skills with an ability to write adequate records and reports
  • Has approximately two years recvoery from problematic use of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Has completed a Level 4 Certificate in Mental Health and Addictions or Intentional Peer Support training

This role is permanent/full-time and hours worked will be 40 per week.

The starting hourly rate for this role will fall between $26 and $29.10 per hour.
