Programme Facilitiator (Mātanga Whakaora)

Te Whānau O Te Maungarongo is an established social services provider delivering a range of specialist counselling services and programmes to support individuals (men and women), tamariki, rangatahi and whānau affected by family violence. Their services include relationship and grief counselling services and individual and group programmes for violent offenders.

Te Whānau O Te Maungarongo are a whānau-based, kaupapa Māori organisation that is deeply committed to upholding tikanga practices. This is a highly rewarding role, offering the opportunity to do transformational work for both individuals and whānau in the Wellington.

Reporting to the Programme Manager, you will be responsible for organising, coordinating, facilitating, and delivering Non-Violence (NV) and Safety programmes for individuals, groups, and whānau, aimed at recognising, encouraging and supporting participant behavioural change.

You will provide therapeutic intervention to men and their whānau affected by family violence, helping to educate and raise awareness of the impact of family harm. You will use various therapeutic approaches to support their journey toward healing and change.

Key responsibilities:

  • Meeting with individuals and whānau, conducting initial assessments to identify their needs, and recommending appropriate programmes and services
  • Facilitate/deliver individual and group non-violence and safety programmes, providing therapeutic interventions using a strengths-based approach.
  • Monitor, assess, and manage the safety and behaviour of clients
  • Monitor and track individual and group attendance and participation
  • Support individual perpetrators by encouraging their participation in recommended interventions and programmes, and motivate them to make positive changes in their behaviour
  • Collaborate with the wider team to ensure individuals receive effective interventions and a comprehensive, holistic wraparound service
  • Participate in community events and networking opportunities to promote the organisation and its services, and to attract new individuals to the services
  • Attend regular team meetings, training sessions, and peer supervision

You will be a skilled and experienced kaiāwhina with a strengths-based approach, demonstrating integrity in your mahi, strong communication skills, and a commitment to working safely and respectfully with vulnerable people. Your passion and energy will enable you to connect effectively with individuals and their whānau.

This is a permanent position, 32 – 40 hours per week, based in Newtown, Wellington. Initially, you will work from the head office in Central Lower Hutt for training and to assist with the setup of the new site and facilities in Newtown. Te Whānau O Te Maungarongo offers ongoing training, professional development and paid monthly clinical and peer supervision.

You are passionate about working with individuals and whanau and supporting their mental health and development. You bring a non-judgmental, mana-enhancing and empathetic approach, with a strong belief that people are capable of change. It is essential that you listen openly, understand the needs behind behaviours, and create a safe space for healing.

Person Profile:

  • Proven experience as a kaiāwhina, support worker, or group facilitator in social services, mental health, domestic/family violence, or addiction settings
  • Experience in a client-facing role, working with vulnerable individuals and engaging with tangata, whānau, rangatahi, and tamariki
  • Experience facilitating individual and group programmes
  • Ability to work in a culturally responsive manner with a diverse range of people from various backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities, demonstrating skills to do so safely and respectfully
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with experience in managing complex casework or crisis situations
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitive messages or disagreements with tact and diplomacy
  • Highly intuitive and sensitive to others needs
  • Strong self-awareness skills, with the ability to set and maintain healthy boundaries
  • Knowledge or experience with various therapeutic modalities, such as motivational interviewing, CBT, mindfulness, etc would be advantageous
  • A strong commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti O Waitangi or experience working in a Kaupapa Māori environment
  • A tertiary qualification in social work, counselling, psychology, or a related discipline is preferred but not required
  • Computer literate and proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, email, database)
  • Have a clean NZ Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable car.
