  • Full-time role, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 4.30pm

About the People’s Project

The People's Project has a goal to make homelessness in Hamilton rare, brief, and non-recurring. We want to end homelessness for every person we work with - so people never have to be homeless again.

Our everyday work is with those people in our community who find themselves in the most significant need - sleeping rough and homeless, often with other complex needs. We help them to firstly find suitable, sustainable, and affordable housing. Then, our team becomes an enduring support to help the people we work with sustain their tenancies and access the wraparound services that are available to them in the wider community for improving their health and wellbeing.

No two days are ever the same! Our team is a resilient bunch, and we are highly supportive of each other. For the past four years The People's Project in Hamilton have been at the forefront of successfully using the Housing First approach to address and end chronic homelessness.

About your role

Reporting to your Manager, you will use your frontline health or social service experience to provide Manaakitanga (support), negotiate outcomes, act as a key liaison and advocate on behalf of clients to help them achieve their Tino Rangatiratanga (independence). Using the Housing First approach, the priority is to rapidly find appropriate, stable housing and then Whanaungatanga (connecting) people with the services they may need to return to full social inclusion. You will reach out to clients, engage with landlords, develop housing, and support plans and do whatever it takes to help clients sustain long term tenancies.

About you

You're skilled in outreach - combining streetwise savvy with compassion and empathy. You are well connected in the community, with the ability to reach out and link in the right people, agencies, and services for the benefit of the people we serve.

You know the system, but you also know that sometimes you need to work it - so that it works for your clients. You combine your practicality with absolute professionalism, managing your caseload with care and knowing your clients and their needs like the back of your hand. You complement your frontline skills with being organised and paying attention to detail that ensures your reporting requirements are delivered accurately and on-time.

From years of frontline experience, you have developed your resilience - you have the capacity to recover quickly from setbacks. You believe deeply in doing the right thing for people, that is why you do what you do.

You love learning and adapting your practice based on good evidence, you are always looking for ways to do things differently to do them better. You believe in social justice and a just society for all. And you share our values, believing that a healthy world is built on strong communities and that housing is a human right.

In addition, your skills and attributes include:

  • proven experience working in the mental health, addiction, or social service sectors, and/or a relevant tertiary
  • Basic understanding of Te Tiriti O Waitangi, Reo Māori and Tikanga, with the desire to learn, share and grow in this area
  • qualification i.e. clinical psychology, social worker or nursing, as examples
  • experience engaging with Maori, Pasifika and/or youth
  • good physical fitness
  • a current full and clean New Zealand driver’s licence
  • understanding of the harm-reduction and Housing First approaches is advantageous, but not essential, as training will be provided.
