ECT Training – Expression of Interest

***** Please note we are almost at capacity for our first in-person full training session. We still welcome registrations, however you’ll be added to the waitlist. You are still able to complete the foundational training in the meantime. *****

By completing this expression of interest form, you are applying to enrol in a hybrid electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) training programme delivered by Te Pou.

This ECT training, developed and delivered by Te Pou at the request of Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, is aimed at doctors and nurses who are working in, or intend to work in, an ECT team in Aotearoa New Zealand. It replaces one previously run at Ko Awatea at Middlemore Hospital.

The new ECT training is hybrid and offers a series of online, self-paced e-learning modules plus a one-day, in-person practical session at Ko Awatea.

It has been developed with the guidance and advice of ECT experts plus people with lived experience of mental health and addiction, and te ao Māori perspectives.

Note, while this training targets health professionals with a clinical background who currently work in ECT (or plan to), the foundation module (phase 1) can be completed by anyone in the wider health sector.

Phase 1 (foundation module) is open to anyone in the health sector who has a professional interest in ECT.

  • It is an online e-learning module that can be done at your own time and pace.

Phase 2 to phase 6 (full training) is designed for those actively working in ECT and/or planning to work in ECT.

  • It is a comprehensive hybrid training programme that involves both self-paced e-learning modules and in-person learning.
  • Trainees must be working at a Health NZ | Te Whatu Ora location that offers ECT so that they are able to observe ECT use in practice as part of their training.
  • If selected, participants will need to seek the approval of their employer, including agreement to cover costs for their travel and accommodation for the one-day, in-person compulsory practical training session at Ko Awatea. Next training is scheduled for Monday, 5 October 2026.

Upon successful completion of phase 1 and phase 6, participants will receive a certificate to recognise their learning.
