Therapeutic Communities (TC) Training: April and May 2026, Auckland

Te Pou invites applications for the Therapeutic Community (TC) training programme.


Facilitators: Suzy Morrison, Rachel Scaife and Kevin Hollingsworth

The training aims to help addiction practitioners, support workers, allied professionals, and students working in therapeutic communities build on the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed for residential addiction services. Content was developed specifically for the Aotearoa New Zealand context.

Training is at no cost to participants, with completion earning a certificate and up to 40 dapaanz Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

Attendees must currently be employed in an addiction Residential Treatment Centre or Drug Treatment Programme.

Course Dates and Times:

Training is four days broken into two 2-day blocks; participants must complete all 4 days.

Block one: Monday 13 April 2026 (9.30am-4pm) & Tuesday 14 April 2026 (9am-4pm)

Block two: Monday 11 May 2026 (9.30am-4pm) & Tuesday 12 May 2026 (9am-4pm)

Course Modules Include:

  • Overview of the Therapeutic Community
  • Community as method
  • TC structure, organisation and environment
  • Relationship dynamics within in a TC
  • Staff roles and responsibilities/rational authority
  • Group work within TC
  • Community tools
  • Work as therapy
  • Continuing care

Completion requirements:

  • 11 hours of self-directed learning through completion of the Hua Oranga module

All applications for the training will be considered and you will be advised if you are accepted or not. All applications must be received by Friday 6 March 2026.
