  • Vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand with a current Annual Practicing Certificate or be eligible for application

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

It is an exciting time for healthcare in New Zealand and for Older Adults' Mental Health Services. We are looking for Consultant Psychiatrists interested in Old Age Psychiatry to join our dynamic multidisciplinary community team. We seek enthusiastic, motivated people committed to improving care.

Mental Health Services for Older Adults (MHSOA) provides community and inpatient services for people experiencing serious mental health issues.

Te Whatu Ora - Waitematā services are based on the North and West coasts of Auckland City and serve one of the largest catchments in Aotearoa, New Zealand. Our community teams work with an ethnically diverse community, including Māori, Pacific, and Asian communities in urban and rural settings (the North Shore, Rodney District and West Auckland).

We provide assessment, treatment and support to:

  • people with severe mental disorders aged 65 or older
  • people of any age with primary dementia and serious behavioural and/or psychological symptoms
  • people with pre-existing severe mental health disorders who would be better cared for by MHSOA, either because of significant medical co-morbidities or frailty.

Kingsley Mortimer Unit (Ward 12) is a 19-bed inpatient unit on the North Shore Hospital site that provides inpatient assessment and treatment for older adults with mental health problems within the Waitematā district.

MHSOA has two community teams - one in the North Shore area covering Rodney District and urban North Shore, and one in West Auckland. Our Sub-Acute and Rehabilitation team (STaR) work collaboratively across the district, providing intensive support.

Teaching and supervising psychiatry trainees, house officers, and medical students can be part of your work. We are an accredited training service and have rotating pre-examination and advanced trainees in psychiatry of old age.

Clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team is a core function of our Consultant Psychiatrists' work, and the MHSOA service operates a clinical governance model to ensure close involvement of clinicians in service development, service planning and quality improvement initiatives.
