Responsible clinician feedback

Registrations closed

Thank you for your interest in this important mahi. We have had an excellent response from kaimahi across the motu and the focus group/interview opportunities are now fully booked. We look forward to sharing the consultation report in the coming months.

About the project

Te Pou and Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora are exploring ways to improve the role of responsible clinicians (RCs) with a focus on identifying current training needs for non-medical RCs.

This work is important as RCs are responsible for people’s treatment under the Mental Health Act 1992. RCs are psychiatrists, nurses, or allied health practitioners who have been appointed to the statutory role.

Who

This is a focus group or individual interview opportunity, asking what is needed to train and prepare responsible clinicians. We are interested in hearing from:

  • consumer, peer support and lived experience (CPSLE) and whānau workforce
  • kaimahi Māori
  • current RCs (both medical and non-medical)
  • service and professional leads
  • mental health workers (i.e. people who often work with RCs and the Act, and those who may be interested in becoming an RC).

What

A 60 to 90-minute online discussion involving general questions about what is important in the training and appointment of RCs.

For current RCs, the discussion will involve specific questions about how RCs are currently trained and appointed, what specialist training is needed, and areas for improvement.

How the information will be used

We will identify key themes and report the findings to Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora to inform future work. We will send a copy to all participants. Your participation and feedback will remain confidential. The discussion may be recorded, and only the Te Pou project team will have access to the recording.

If you have any questions, please email Kerry Weir-Smith.
