On Thursday 21 November 2024, the National Committee for Addiction Treatment (NCAT) hosted Addiction Leadership Day in Ōtautahi, Christchurch at He Waka Tapu, a kaupapa Māori service provider.
Over 100 addiction sector leaders attended with the theme of the event being, “Tutū maiea marangai, whakatere ana Poupaka I When the easterly wind rises, Poupaka goes sailing.” This theme was reflected in the presentations of the day.
Tane Keepa, from He Waka Tapu opened the day beautifully with an uplifting mihi whakatau, and NCAT Co-chair, Deb Fraser-Komene who MC’ed the day.
The hui hosted an array of influential leaders from across the sector sharing their experiences. Honourable mention includes Dame Sue Bagshaw, who focused on her inspiring journey of creating the Christchurch Youth Hub and Daryl Gregory, on his leadership journey in establishing He Waka Tapu.
We would like to thank all the speakers for their informative and engaging presentations. Presentation themes covered sector initiatives and tracking, the Global AOD collaboration and Global Leadership Exchange, workforce development with the CPSLE roadshow, ADHD, autism and addiction, Uprising Hauora Experience, Social Housing and AOD.
It was also announced that NCAT’s service to the people of New Zealand has been recognized with their new status as a Charitable Trust.
A big thank you to the NCAT organising committee, Deb Fraser for her leadership and the team at Te Pou for a fantastic event. We are excited to reconnect with everyone at the next Addiction Leadership Day in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington in 2025.
