Team summary now available on HoNOS family dashboards

The Health of the Nation Outcome Scale (HoNOS) family dashboards Aotearoa were launched last year, replacing local Health NZ district reports sent by email. A combined dashboard is available for HoNOS (for adults aged 18 to 64 years) and HoNOS65+ (for adults 65 years and older). A separate dashboard is available for HoNOSCA (used with children up to the age of 17 years).

There has been a lot of interest in the HoNOS family dashboards from the sector. Services and teams want to know how they are doing. How do their outcomes compare to those of other teams and services?

However, the dashboards did not include a summary page for teams. They have now been updated to include a team summary page. This makes the dashboard more clinically relevant than ever before.

Every mental health team in Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora can now see their outcome results and compare them with other teams and with the national average.

What’s involved in the new team summary?

With the new team summary, every team in our mental health service (currently all the adult, older adult, and child and youth mental health teams) can see their outcome results at a glance and compare their results with other similar teams from across the country. Teams can check on their collection rates- inpatient and community- and see which items are of most clinical concern at admission, review and discharge.

Teams can also see the people they are not accepting into their services. Some of these people have quite high clinical needs, and it always raises the question why they aren’t accepted into services.

The team function also allows all teams to compare themselves with the national average to see how their outcomes compare.

These are important developments. Sometimes, aggregated information can seem far removed from the lives and priorities of clinicians but with this new team summary that changes. Clinicians and managers will find this interesting and important. It represents a big step forward in making data meaningful and relevant to clinical practice.

In due course, further dashboards for infant services, forensic services, and services for people with learning difficulties will also be made available.
