On completion participants receive a certificate and earn dapaanz Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Training is at no cost to participants.

The Therapeutic Community (TC) training programme is developed specifically for the Aotearoa New Zealand context.

The aim of the training is to support addiction practitioners, addiction support workers and other relevant professionals and students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills that can be used in the addiction therapeutic community context.

Course Dates and Times:


Training is six days broken into two 3-day blocks; participants must complete all 6 days.

Block one:
18 September 2024 (9.30am-4pm) 19 & 20 September 2024 (9am-4pm)

Block two
: 6 November 2024 (9.30am-4pm) 7 & 8 November 2024 (9am-4pm)

Course Modules Include:

  • Overview of the Therapeutic Community
  • Community as method
  • TC structure, organisation and environment
  • Relationship dynamics within in a TC
  • Staff roles and responsibilities/rational authority
  • Group work within TC
  • Community tools
  • Work as therapy
  • Continuing care
  • Supervised practicum/learning by experience

Completion requirements:

  • 46 hours of face-to-face learning
  • 40-hour supervised professional skills practicum in a TC
  • 11 hours of self-directed learning through completion of the Hua Oranga module
