Alcohol & Other Drugs Counsellor - Residential Facility

About Higher Ground

Higher Ground Drug Rehabilitation Trust provides quality abstinence-based treatment within a therapeutic community for clients who are severely dependent on alcohol and other drugs. Our primary focus is an 18-week residential program that is based on the 12 Step recovery principles.

Based in Te Atatu, this great opportunity has opened at up Higher Ground and we are looking for a Residential Counsellor to join our dedicated team of professionals. This is a permanent, full time (40 hours per week) position, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday 7.30am -4pm & Wednesday evening 12.30pm – 9.00pm. Some statutory holidays will also be required.

In this role, you will:

  • Establish relationships with clients and help clients toward a deeper understanding of their concerns/issues.
  • Group facilitation
  • Maintain records of treatment
  • Design and implement individual and group treatment plans
  • Support, mentor and supervise Students of Higher Ground

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone who is passionate about working in this industry, who has a positive attitude, and is able to work as part of a team.

  • Confidence in demonstrating a wide range of approaches that facilitate all of our client’s individual needs while in rehabilitation.
  • Skills in engaging clients whilst maintaining professional boundaries
  • High Level of verbal and written communication skills including basic counselling, negotiation and problem solving skills
  • Ability to build and maintain therapeutic relationships
  • Experience facilitating groups and family group counselling
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti O Waitangi and practical ways to implement it within your work.
  • Commitment to te reo Maori (me ona Tikanga) and a hands on Whanau approach to treatment

Knowledge of the 12 step programme would be beneficial as would previous work experience in an AOD facility.

What you will need:

  • Level 7 qualification in a relevant discipline e.g. Mental Health, Alcohol & Drug Studies, Psychotherapy, Psychology, Counselling, Social work etc.
  • Current practicing certificate with a professional body e.g. DAPAANZ or other HPCA registration,
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a relevant social work, mental health or alcohol and other drug service setting,

Candidates with a personal history of alcohol and other drug dependence are required to have a minimum of two years continuous abstinence.
