MHFA Aotearoa Instructor Expression of Interest

Become a MHFA Aotearoa instructor

By completing this Expression of Interest form, you are applying to become an accredited MHFA Aotearoa instructor for the 4th edition of the Standard Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa New Zealand programme.

We recommend attending a two-day Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa workshop before you apply to become an instructor.

All MHFA instructors must show they have the skills and experience to successfully run MHFA workshops. Applicants will need to show they have:

  • good knowledge about mental health challenges and treatments
  • good teaching and communication skills with adult learners
  • good interpersonal skills
  • empathy and compassion to people with mental health challenges
  • personal and/or professional experience with people with mental health challenges
  • good background knowledge of mental health services in Aotearoa
  • the passion and enthusiasm to deliver MHFA workshops
  • a good business plan or organisational support.

Te Pou is committed to ensuring MHFA Aotearoa accredited instructors have the appropriate skills and experience to successfully deliver MHFA workshops, along with ensuring there are accredited instructors available across the country. An applicant's suitability for the role will be assessed according to the responses given in their Expression of Interest and subsequent phone conversation with the MHFA Aotearoa team.

If you progress to attend the new instructor training, you will be assessed during the course. You must successfully pass the assessment to gain accreditation as a MHFA Aotearoa instructor.

New instructor training

If your application is accepted, the next step is to complete the five-day in-person MHFA Aotearoa new instructor training course. The investment to attend is NZ$3650 plus GST per person. This covers:

  • tuition
  • workshop expenses and resources
  • accreditation certificates
  • the first annual instructor registration fee with Te Pou.

There is a discount available for NGOs and non-profit organisations. Please contact us about the discount.

The course fee must be paid to secure your place on your chosen new instructor training course. You will be sent a link to our MHFA Aotearoa e-store to complete the payment.

Upon completion of the course and passing the assessment successfully, accredited instructors will receive access to the online resource hub containing teaching materials including the Standard MHFA Aotearoa 4th edition workshop manual, access to the PowerPoint slides, workshop activities and videos, and the Standard MHFA Aotearoa 4th edition teaching manuals.

Instructor agreement

Upon completing the new instructor course, all instructors must sign a MHFA Aotearoa instructor agreement. Before you apply to become a MHFA instructor, please review the sample instructor agreement. You must confirm your acceptance of the requirements when you complete the Expression of Interest form.

Upon successful submission, you will be taken to a confirmation page and will also receive a confirmation email. If this does not happen, your application has not been submitted.

Please answer the following questions to ensure you meet the selection criteria. Please include specific examples of your experience.

Once your completed Expression of Interest form and acceptance of the instructor agreement have been received and reviewed, the MHFA Aotearoa team will be in touch about your application.
