Every year, Te Pou analyses information about the mental health and addiction workforce employed by Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora (Te Whatu Ora). The information is provided by the Health Workforce Information Programme (HWIP) team. It is used to estimate the Te Whatu Ora full-time equivalent (FTE) workforce delivering mental health and addiction services for adults (people aged 18 and over). This brief outlines the methods used to estimate the adult services’ FTE workforce employed and vacant. These methods are based on good research practices to make use of available information (World Health Organization, 2005, 2010); including the HWIP Te Whatu Ora employee dataset, notified Te Whatu Ora FTEs vacant, and the biannual Whāraurau (2023) workforce stocktake.
