This new instructor training is a five-day in-person course for people who want to become an accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Aotearoa instructor.

New instructor training must only be purchased once your application to become a Youth Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa instructor has been accepted.

How do I become an accredited Youth MHFA instructor?

Te Pou is committed to ensuring Youth MHFA Aotearoa accredited instructors have the appropriate skills and experience to successfully deliver MHFA workshops, and ensuring there are accredited instructors available across the country. Anyone interested in becoming a Youth MHFA Aotearoa instructor must complete an Expression of Interest form. Find out more about becoming an accredited Youth MHFA instructor here.

What happens after my application is accepted?

Once your application is accepted, you need to pay the new instructor training course fee to secure your place on the new instructor training course.

The course fee covers:

  • tuition
  • workshop expenses and resources
  • accreditation certificates
  • the first annual instructor registration fee with Te Pou.

Upon completion of the course, accredited instructors will receive the Youth MHFA Aotearoa instructors kit containing teaching materials including the Youth MHFA Aotearoa workshop manual, access to the PowerPoint slides, workshop activities and videos, and the Youth MHFA Aotearoa teaching manuals.

The course fee must be paid before participants can attend the course.

There is a discount available for NGOs and non-profit organisations. Please contact us about this.

What should I expect at the training course?

Day 1 and Day 2 (Monday and Tuesday: 8:30am to 4:30pm)

  • Trainee instructors will participate in the Youth MHFA Aotearoa workshop. This allows participants the opportunity to observe facilitation skills, how to teach activities, how to engage and monitor a room, and maintain safety.

Day 3 (Wednesday: 8:30am to 4:30pm)

  • Facilitation skills and workshop content will be reviewed.
  • Each trainee instructor will be given a section of the Youth MHFA workshop to review and teach over the next two days.

Day 4 and Day 5 (Thursday and Friday: 8:30am to 4:30pm)

  • Trainee instructors will present the section of the Youth MHFA workshop they were allocated and will be assessed by the master trainers.
  • We will be trying to get through as much of the Youth MHFA workshop as possible. This enables training instructors to be really familiar with the content of the course.
