PRIMHD

Programme for the Integration of Mental Health Data

PRIMHD (pronounced ‘primed’) is Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora's national mental health and addiction information collection of activity and outcomes data. It stands for ‘Programme for the Integration of Mental Health Data’.

The data is collected from Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Districts and non-government organisations (NGOs) for Health NZ Te Whatu Ora.

PRIMHD data is used to report on what services are being provided, who is providing the services, and what outcomes are being achieved for tāngata whai ora across New Zealand’s mental health sector.

This information enables better quality service planning and decision making by mental health and addiction service providers at local, regional and national levels.

Te Pou uses PRIMHD information to provide quarterly national HoNOS summary reports to services providers.

How is PRIMHD used

PRIMHD data is used to report on what services are being provided and by whom. The data is also used to look at the outcomes being achieved for service users. PRIMHD data is used by a number of programmes and outcome measures.

  • For details on the adult, forensic, and child and adolescent key performance indicators (KPIs) which mental health services are collecting and using, visit the Key Performance Indicators website.
  • For details on the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS), visit the HoNOS family of measures page.
  • For details on the Alcohol and Other Drug Measure (ADOM), visit the ADOM page.
  • View a  PRIMHD activity collection and use guide, the purpose of which is to improve national consistency in the collection of PRIMHD activity type codes, also known as T Codes.

Why data matters video

Why data matters is a short, animated video introducing PRIMHD and the importance of collecting tāngata whai ora data to the mental health and addiction workforce.

PRIMHD and the reasons why kaimahi need to take the time to collect the required information for PRIMHD reporting are not well understood by the wider mental health and addiction workforce. This video aims to address this gap in knowledge by providing an entry-level explanation of how PRIMHD is used to improve mental health and addiction services and the outcomes of tāngata whai ora.

The video is designed for viewers with no previous knowledge or understanding of PRIMHD. It provides a quick introduction to PRIMHD for non-experts, with no technical language or detailed explanations.

The video explains when activity and outcome collections should be made and used. It tells the story of a single person, Bob and his journey through mental health services, from referral to a service through to discharge from a service and the points in between, highlighting the uses of his data throughout.

The Why data matters video will be useful as part of new staff induction processes, or training for anyone in the mental health and addiction workforce who is new to PRIMHD or doesn't understand its significance.

PRIMHD National Stakeholders Group

The PRIMHD National Stakeholders Group leads outcomes collection in Health NZ Te Whatu Ora Districts' services, delivering workshops and presentations, organising and planning IT system development, and coordinating training and resources for staff. Many of the group implement PRIMHD.

The CoP (Community of Practice) analyst group

This community of practice group exists to support each other with all things PRIMHD, including use of activity codes and outcome data. The group also share issues and good practice surrounding data in a wider sense, for the purpose of improving services for the people that use those services.
