Let's get talking toolkit

The Let’s get talking toolkit consists of seven tools and is intended for use by leaders, managers, therapists and practitioners across primary and secondary health care services.

The toolkit supports the planning and delivery of talking therapies using a stepped care approach.

1. Let's get talking - Introduction

A stepped care approach to talking therapies

Watch the Let's get talking: Introduction video for an overview of stepped care, then access the other tools as needed to support or enhance talking therapies delivery. The Let’s get talking: Introduction fact sheet covers the key information from the video.

2. Let's get talking - Planning

Develop or extend talking therapies delivery

This tool assists services to establish or extend talking therapies delivery using the Getting it right workforce planning method. It guides services through the six steps of workforce planning.

The planning tables within the tool are also available as a Word template to download and use.

3. Let's get talking - Skills survey

Identify strengths and areas for development in talking therapies delivery

This tool supports services to identify workforce capacity and capability to deliver evidence-based talking therapies

Part A asks practitioners to self-assess their knowledge and skills in talking therapies.

Part B asks practitioners about current talking therapies delivery in order to identify strengths and areas for development.

The skills survey is also available as a Word template to download and use.

4. Let's get talking - Assessment

How to match talking therapies to peoples’ needs

This tool provides assessment and screening guidance for practitioners to match people to levels of talking therapy, within a stepped care approach. It also provides information on review of therapy progress.

The example templates used are also available as Word templates to download and use.

5. Let's get talking - Therapy

A guide to evidence-based talking therapies

This tool provides information on the evidence base for various talking therapies. It also provides examples of current evidence of talking therapies with Māori, Pasifika and Asian people, and refugees, asylum seekers and new migrants. The second part of the tool provides an overview of brief interventions and the evidence base.

6. Let's get talking - Review

Progress and outcome measures to support talking therapies delivery

This tool provides information on progress and outcome measures to support talking therapies delivery, including suggestions of those which can be used for mental health and/or addiction presentations.

7. Let's get talking - Practice support

Competencies, training and supervision for talking therapies delivery

This tool provides information to guide practitioners about the competencies, training and supervision needed to deliver talking therapies effectively in mental health and addiction services. The tool is divided into two parts. Part one provides information and guidance and part two provides suggested resources relating to competencies, training and supervision for talking therapies delivery.
