In Keeping it Real | Kia Pono te Tika, the Real Skill Maintaining learning and kaimahi wellbeing aims to ensure: People working in health are reflective and enabled to work effectively alongside tāngata whai ora and whānau.
There’s something here for everyone. On this page you will find a range of free resources such as e-learning modules, videos, podcasts, guidance documents, and practical tools. You can use these resources to increase your knowledge and skills, especially the gaps identified in the Real Skills assessment tool. Weave them into your individual or team development plans.
The resources are organised below into the three levels of the framework: essential, enhanced, and leadership.
Essential level (for everyone working in health)
Worker wellbeing
Te Pou website provides a range of wellbeing videos resources for kaimahi to explore ways of maintaining their own wellbeing and contributing to a healthy workplace.
Reflective practice (Supervision)
This e-learning introduces kaimahi to the models, benefits, and application of supervision practice. Suitable for kaimahi in support work, CPSLE and clinical roles. Approx. 90 mins of self-paced learning.
Three steps to meeting health literacy needs
Te Tāhū Hauora Health Quality & Safety Commission provides written guidance (30 pages) on the importance of meeting health literacy needs and a three-step process for communicating with tāngata whai ora and whānau.
ISBAR video
Health NZ Southern has developed a short video (8 mins) that outlines the ISBAR communication method for assisting with verbal and written communication during handovers and referrals.

The Difference podcast
A podcast series by support workers, for support workers. Topics and resources include vicarious trauma, reflective practice, leadership, supporting older people, supporting parents, peer support in EDs, and career pathways.
Vicarious trauma
This brief evidence update (10 pages) provides kaimahi with information about the potential impacts on wellbeing and practice, as well as strategies to prevent and alleviate vicarious trauma.
Self-care in trauma informed organisations
Whāraurau provides an e-learning to help kaimahi understand how trauma can affect people who support, protect and serve vulnerable tamariki and whānau. Approx. 90 mins to complete.
Supervision guides
Te Pou offers a series of supervision guides tailored to addiction practitioners, support workers, CPSLE workforce, and nurses.
Skills Matter grants
Funding for postgraduate training for new graduates and existing practitioners working in Health NZ, NGO and primary care settings, including nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists and addiction practitioners.
Addiction career and education pathways
Te Pou provides information on how to become an addiction support worker, addiction peer support worker, or addiction practitioner/health professional. Includes information on education providers and courses available.
Addiction and problem gambling harm scholarship
This scholarship is open to anyone studying towards a qualification that contributes to reducing harms from alcohol and other drugs and problem gambling.
Te Rau Ora funding opportunities
Te Rau Ora Scholarships & Bursaries provide financial assistance for Māori students undertaking or completing a NZQA accredited qualification in health and wellbeing. Including the Māori Health Leadership Scholarships.
Futures that Work scholarship
The Futures that Work Pacific Mental Health and Addiction Scholarship programme is open to those of Indigenous-Pacific descent, currently enrolled in an NZQA-accredited mental health-related qualification.
