Keeping it Real | Kia Pono te Tika: Overview of framework updates

Keeping it Real | Kia Pono te Tika enhances the previous versions of the framework, known as Let’s get real. Read about the framework’s whakapapa.

The framework is relevant to all roles across health aiming for better outcomes for tāngata whai ora and whānau experiencing addiction and/or mental health challenges. The scope and structure of the framework has not changed.

The priority of the 2025 update was to respond to the changing needs of our communities and workforces. As a result, the updated framework has a stronger focus on equitable wellbeing, cultural safety, diversity, and inclusivity. Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and mātauranga Māori are embedded throughout the framework, recognising that achieving equitable health outcomes for all tāngata whenua is paramount.

The language in the updated framework is more people-centred, strengths-based, and inclusive. In particular, the use of kupu Māori has been strengthened. The Real Skills headings have been renamed, for example, ‘Working with Māori’ is now ‘Working alongside tāngata whenua’.

The table below outlines key changes in each part of the framework.
